~The blue blur's first appearance & physical appearance~
SEGA requested to change their mascot from Alex Kidd and a game that will sell over a million copies. The SEGA team then created the blur blur, Sonic. They designed him as a blue hedgehog, that can outrun anything or anyone. A small group in SEGA worked on Sonic the Hedgehog, and that small group renamed themselves as SONIC TEAM. They began to advertise Sonic, especially in a singing group's tour called "Wonder 3" they sponsored them and painted Sonic the Hedgehog on the tour bus. This will encourage some audience to buy the game, "Sonic the Hedgehog" (1991, Genesis).
Naoto Ohshima, in 1991 designed Sonic the Hedgehog as a childlike character. He was also quite short, and had a very round body. Akira Watanabe took the design and worked on the artwork for the package of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991, Genesis). Akira Watanabe also did artwork for similar games which had Sonic with a small body.
In 1998, including Amy Rose and Miles "Tails" Prower, Sonic the Hedgehog had been redesigned for Sonic Adventure (1998, Dreamcast). He was redesigned by Yuji Uekawa, as a much taller character, with longer legs and a less spherical body, longer and more drooping spikes, and green-colored eyes. This design has been now used in all latest Sonic the Hedgehog games starting from Sonic Adventure (1998, Dreamcast).

~Spin Dash and Homing~
This attack has been used ever since his second game, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992). This attack allows Sonic to.quickly accelerate into this roll from a stationary position.
In 3D Sonic games, a Homing attack is very well used and common. Sonic jumps in the air curled up as a ball and targets enemies and obstacles. He can bounce off enemies and go from one place to another. This attack has been introduced in Sonic Adventure.

~ Miles "Tails" Prower ~
Miles "Tails" Prower is Sonic's first official best friend. Tails can almost keep up with Sonic in games by using his tails up and rapidly, which is a special technique to him. Tails is also a mechanical genius, who loves to create inventions. Him and Chuck Thorndyke (In Sonic X Seasons 1-3) has a very strong relationship because of this. Tails' inventions can save Sonic from dangerous situations. Sonic has a "Big brother-to-a-small brother" relationship with him. There is hardly a scene, where Sonic and Tails are far apart. In games like Sonic Rush (DS, 2005), and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis, 1992) Tails follows Sonic around and always finds a way to help him out.

~ Sonic's Rivals and Enemies ~
Sonic's main rival (also other characters) is obviously Doctor Eggman. Doctor Eggman has appeared in every game Sonic appeared in. At first, Sonic challenges Eggman all the time for turning his animal friends to badniks. Now on to the present, Sonic challenges Eggman for Chaos Emeralds to prevent Eggman from taking over the world.
Shadow the Hedgehog is Sonic's arch rival. They first met in Sonic Adventure 2 and had argued and battled against each other. Shadow even called himself the superior one over Sonic. But at some events, Sonic and Shadow see each other as more than a friend than a rival.
Mario, Nintendo's official mascot will be Sonic's rival in "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games" (Wii, DS 2007) Mario and Sonic have to compete against each other for the olympics in this special massive Nintendo-Sega crossover.

~ Super Smash Bros. Brawl ~
Sonic the Hedgehog also appears a playable character in Nintendo's huge Wii game video game called "Super Smash Bros. Brawl".
